Life & death of Ferro Lad

by Josh Crawley

For some reason the past few years, the winter season puts me in the mood to checked out legion of Super-Heroes. While i don’t have a excellent number of legion comics, my collection of them grows slowly every year. The past two years have been particularly excellent for reprint collections, whether it’s the many showcase provides collections, An Eye for an Eye complied with up by The more things modification by Paul Levitz, Keith Giffen & Co., or the book I’m itching to get to soon, The Life & death of Ferro Lad (as part of the DC Comics classics library hardcover line). If you’re thinking about reading some L.o.S.H. yourself, 1,050 Years of the Future has a excellent sampling from many eras. (Normally I’d be torn about recommending excellent Darkness Saga, because of the lack of a excellent introduction/set-up), however it’s out of print for some reason. My assumption would be DC is waiting to make it an entry in the previously mentioned DC Comics classics library line, however at this point I wouldn’t hold my breath. After all, this is the business that has let born to Run as well as terminal Velocity (two outstanding Wally West Flash stories by mark Waid & Co.) go out of print.

And on that tangent, time for some quick link-blogging, as well as then I’m out of here. as well many holiday gifts to get completed (and as well much Phantom hourglass to play).

‡ I don’t have much by mark Schultz. Most, if not all, of what I have are comics he’s written. I have ended up being a excellent fan of his art (even if some people just think about him a “poor man’s version” of Al Williamson). I’ve truly enjoyed looking at the different Drawings books Flesk publications has put out, however I’ve never bought any type of of them. I believe I’ve discovered the very first one. Blue book will not be offered with book or comic stores, so be sure you comply with the link for details. It seems like a high high quality version of an ashcan you’d buy at a convention, however I truly don’t mind; 8.5 by 5.5 inches is nice size for preliminary artwork.

‡ last week you may keep in mind me discussing X Necrosha: The Gathering, which had some coloring by my good friend Chad Fidler. Well, he just recently published a few of the colored, non-lettered pages in his deviantART gallery. He likewise published pages from Witchblade #88 (written by Ron Marz as well as collected in Witchblade volume 2: Awakenings) that he worked on, in addition to more top Cow work as well as Athena Voltaire pages!

Parker the Hunter

‡ It seems a bit early for end of/Best of the Year lists, however they’re out there. looking at the Barnes as well as Noble listing (by Douglas Wolk), I made an fascinating observation: I haven’t checked out any type of of them. Not in full, anyways (Final Crisis). I do want to checked out Luba, as well as the others all noise interesting. as well as the Honorable Mentions I haven’t even partially read, however I definitely want to checked out Darwyn Cooke’s Parker The hunter adaptation as well as Scott Pilgrim volume 5. I’m believing of working on my own list, however I usually end up forgetting stuff. Plus, I like to really wait up until after the end of the year. I’ll most likely just end up doing my own listing after I checked out a lot of others to remind myself what came out this year.

‡ ever wondered exactly how comics went primarily from newsstands to comics book stores? Jim McLauchlin of Hero effort published a nice essay on Phil Seuling, the response to your question.

Gossip Girl

‡ While I don’t always agree with her, Johanna Draper Carlson’s comments on the Gossip woman manga preview were quite much area on. as well as no, I will not admit to understanding anything else about Gossip Girl.

Feel free to get in touch with me with creators you’d like to see spotlighted, comics for review, comments, concerns, corrections, questions, or even just your preferred beer. Robert Greenberger

by Robert Greenberger

Superman: Emperor Joker

Superman seldom faced the Joker in comics other than the occasional story in World’s Finest Comics however always in the business of the Caped Crusader. It wasn’t up until John Byrne revamped the character in 1986 that the two satisfied one on one. since then, they have had regular meetings, most notably in the multi-part legendary that kicked off the new millennium. In Superman: Emperor Joker we see the Clown prince of criminal offense gain sufficient power to really present a threat to the Metropolis Marvel.

The new edition collects Superman #160-161, Adventures of Superman #582-583, Superman: guy of Steel #104-105, action Comics #769-770 as well as Superman: Emperor Joker #1. This was during a stretch when there were four titles, one a week, each sporting a numbered triangle to signify the reading order. The innovative teams usually satisfied for Superman Summits where a number of months or years’ worth of arcs were hammered out, total with sub-plots as well as crossovers so there was road map that enabled the stories to checked out relatively seamlessly as well as feel like an organic experience.

Superman #160

The very first four parts were at first dubbed “Superman: Arkham” as well as it appeared that the Last son of Krypton was a criminal who escaped confinement on a everyday basis, only to be apprehended by Bizarro as well as returned to prison. It’s a topsy turvy world, as denoted by clever playing card cover styles that shows two sides to the characters.

At the science Miscreants Reconstruction Center, Superman allies himself with John Henry Irons, who is likewise the armored hero Steel. The duo attempt to circumnavigate this twisted truth to stop the Joker, however have many a difficulty thrown in their path including the JLA — Joker league of Anarchy featuring amped versions of Skizm; Scorch; gorgeous Gilly; Bounty; Ignition; Poison Ivy; Bizarro; and, Enigma.

They discover from a dejected Mr. Mxyzptlk, the fifth dimension’s wonderful imp, that he had been duped. By the end of the very first four problems it is discovered that Mxyzptlk let himself be talked into providing a fraction of his capabilities to the Joker. as well as you just understand that won’t go well. If the diabolically brilliant physician Doom wielded the Power Cosmic, picture what an insane being would do with wonderful might. For starters, as well as with a nod to Steve Englehart’s handle the character, “two plus two equals fish!”

Superman: guy of Steel #105

With one arc down, visitors were treated to Emperor Joker #1, from Loeb as well as Kelly, drawn by Duncan Rouleau, Todd Nauck, Carlo Barberi, as well as Scott McDaniel. After a recap, Superman as well as Steel charm to their genuine JLA comrades to assist however the pleas autumn on deaf ears. Fortunately, Superboy as well as Supergirl agree to help them as well as not a moment as well soon.

The Joker has utilized the power to remake truth in his own twisted image, catching Batman as well as killing him on a everyday basis, only to resurrect him for one more helping. This of program stretched the Dark Knight’s mental mettle, pushing to him the breaking point.

Things do not go well at very first as Superboy as well as Supergirl are killed as well as Mrs. Clark Kent, Lois Lane, betrays them. Superman discovers Batman’s corpse at Gotham’s authorities headquarters. as well as if Superboy as well as Supergirl are dead in this reality, rather than heaven they discover themselves in Hell, dealing with Lord Satanus. The remainder of the heroes are transformed into animals.

Action Comics #770

In the final confrontation, Superman handles to utilize the Joker’s own foibles against him which forces him to return the power to Mr. Mxyzptlk, resetting truth back to the method things should be. With one exception.

Batman’s mind has been shattered as well as needs to be restored. It really will take a guy of science, Superman, as well as a guy of faith, the Spectre, to save the hero.

Jeph Loeb was the chief designer of this event, aided by Ed McGuinness as well as Cam Smith on the eponymous series, with J.M. DeMetteis (no complete stranger to the Joker or Batman) working with Mike Miller on Adventures; mark Schultz, Doug Mahnke, as well as Tom Nguyen handled guy of Steel as well as Joe Kelly as well as Kano batted clean-up with Action.

The composing is taut as well as right here we discover some new things about the world’s finest heroes, their allies, as well as their enemies. It’s a heralded story arc for great reason as well as well worth a look at the series when heroism was front as well as center.

FIFTH DEGREE: MARVEL’S SIEGE #1, IRON man 2 TRAILER

This post is Filed Under:

Siege #1 Director’s Cut

by Josh Crawley

I would have thought for an “event seven years in the making” the four page text back-up in Siege #1 wouldn’t have a glaring typesetting error that involved repeating the text from page one (and some from page two) on the third page. On the other hand, an “event” that’s only four issues – or 23; no, sorry, make that 37, after counting everything on the checklist (assuming those that’s a right listing) – yeah, I give up.

I’d go read fall of the Hulks, but the constant teasing of “Who is the Red Hulk?” I care even less about.

I get asked a lot as to whether I’ve seen this or that trailer; a lot of recently Iron man 2. Here’s the deal: I don’t care. Why? thankful you asked. First, I’ll have months to see it before the motion picture comes out on may 7 (the Friday after complimentary Comic book Day). Second, I’m going to see the motion picture anyway; I don’t need a trailer to lure me. Third, I like surprises in movies. I don’t see lots of motion pictures in theaters, but this is going to be one of them. When I first see Rhodey don the war maker in the movie, I’d like it to be on the big screen. I want the thrill to be that much greater! Finally, working in this service on the front lines, there’re plenty of spoilers. I like to lessen them whenever possible.

Secret invasion war Machine

In the meantime, I’ll just stick to reading my Iron Man: war maker softcover! I’ve also been indicating to check out the secret invasion war maker softcover, but I’m not going to hurry too swiftly to read it. As I said before, there’s months until the motion picture comes out.

I’m going to try and do this every week, if only so I have some idea of stuff that grabbed my attention at the time, and maybe it’ll make a year-end column a little much easier for myself. items of interest released this week!

+ The chill hardcover from DC/Vertigo Crime
+ X-Men Vs fantastic four premiere hardcover
+ Magic The gathering path of the Planeswalker softcover graphic novel
+ Troublemakers hardcover graphic novel

Also knowing my luck, each week I’ll probably also have to do a list of “Items of interest I forgot to mention last week!”

Miscellaneous Bits!

+ Sorry, no crazy new Year’s Eve story. I won’t complain if the rest of the year goes as smoothly, relaxed, and fun as that evening, though (Thanks, Ryann and Tim!).

+ I was also thinking of this week’s column as a retrospective of my first partial year and looking forward to the next year, but considering that I’m still ironing things out format-wise, I’ll save it for next year.

+ next week I’ll be looking through marvel Previews #77, and the week after will be Previews #256.

HOORAY FOR EARTH-s/t

I want to begin this evaluation by estimating my very first publish on Hooray For Earth, from April 2007:

Hooray for earth get an A for their persistence. They’ve made every effort to get this blogger’s attention. In fact, you may state they’re relentless. Yeah. That’s exactly how I’d explained their self-titled debut, as a matter of fact. Pop music that is driven by drums. In every song, it’s the drums that increase to the top of the mix as well as dominate the combination of growling synth as well as guitar. Under all that are the vocals, which seem secondary. even “Magazines,” the record’s unusual sluggish number (and one of it’s finest tracks), is characterized by the beat.

So, has anything altered with Hooray For Earth? The short response is, “Yes.” The tunes are mixed better, as well as the vocals are much clearer. As an album, the work is like The Beastie Boys, circa Paul’s Boutique, than before. numerous of the tracks are short (about 2 minutes), as well as noise much more like fragments or ideas than completely realized songs. Sometimes, they’re utilized as patches between tunes like “Want want Want,” a killer, fast-paced ballad (if such a thing is possible), as well as “So Happy” one more relentlessly fast-paced tune. other times, bits like “Party,” which clocks in at under 2:30, have sufficient room-shaking, hard-rock riffs to make it much more than simple filler.

This is celebration music, for sure, however much more than that, it’s a full-fledged record. Congratulations, boys. Your persistence has paid off. On Dopamine records.

Take Care

REPORT ON RETIRED HEROES

‘Avengers: Endgame’ made it relatively remove that Tony Stark as well as Steve Rogers will not be leading the Avengers in upcoming installments. With Tony dead as well as Steve now older than Moses, it would be rather a difficulty to focus any type of future films on these character’s playing a leadership role. So, exactly how are sales of Iron guy as well as Captain America’s crucial comics doing now that the MCU has successfully retired these A-list heroes?

According to the data sales are doing completely fine, say thanks to you extremely much! Whether it’s extremely very first appearance or later Silver Age reintroduction’s of Cap as well as Iron guy both are still managing to a lot more or less maintain their value.

Captain America Comics #1 (February 1941) – origin of Captain America as well as Bucky by S&K; very first appearance of Captain America as well as Bucky; introduction of “Captain America Sentinels of liberty Club”

Here’s a marvel traditional that can be thought about a cornerstone book of the burgeoning marvel universe. It’s priced accordingly: the hypothetical value of a 9.8 very first printing of this golden Age crucial currently stands at a mind-bending $17, 600,000.00. seems like the type of number you would expect somebody would request the original Mona Lisa. In any type of case, this is the very first appearance of Captain America as well as with a overall of 166 copies on the CGC census as well as the greatest graded copy at 9.4, the long term returns are strong across the board with the only unfavorable data discovered on the previously mentioned 9.4. After 2 ComicConnect auctions, after a $343, 057.00 sale on 08/09/2011, the next sale on 06/12/2013 saw a final cost of $306, 050.00 bringing a unfavorable -10.8% return. however the most recent sale of a 7.0 on Heritage on 05/16/2019 ended at $228,000.00. just below the currently expected fair market value for this book at that grade.

Tales of Suspense #39 (February 1963) – very first appearance of Iron Man

The extremely very first Iron guy is a a lot more cost effective however no less renowned comic. The ideal time to have chosen this comic up would have been the early 1990s (the 1989 Overstreet value in NM = $420.00[!?!]). Yet, who on earth would have predicted back then that Brat pack alum Robert Downey Jr. would make Tony Stark a box-office phenomenon. Not even physician Strange. maybe not surprisingly, provided the desirability as well as scarcity of these Silver Age marvel keys, this comic shows no indications of depreciating –even with Tony’s death in Endgame. A much higher supply holds for the very first Iron guy appearance too. 2,147 overall units (but only 1 a 9.8). long term returns: exact same story as Cap—all strong across the board except for a 9.6 this time. There we see a dropping off after the last 3 sales. On 09/14/2017 a ComicConnect auction ended at $276, 000.00. Then, on 11/16/2017, a copy offered on Heritage for $155,350.00, as well as one more Heritage auction on 05/16/2019, saw a $111,000.00 cost tag. That’s a decrease of -51.7%. as well as other than a minor decrease on 8.5 grades, over the last two years this book has positive numbers. I don’t see a offer off happening soon.

Captain America #100 (March 1968) – very first problem to silver age titled series; death of Franz Gruber

What a cover! That’s prime, grade-A, 100% Kirby goodness true believer. as well as yes, it is still selling for strong returns. This is crucial since, if any type of Captain America comics would be in risk of devaluation by a diminished onscreen appearance, it would be his later series, starting with his Silver Age re-appearances. With 3,750 overall copies on the CGC census, the great news is the long-lasting returns are strong around with 1.8 grades being the only exception. With a $4, 800.00 FMV in 9.8 grade, the 12 week returns are as follows: Trending up with positive +6.7% returns on 9.0 (after 7 sales) as well as positive +25% on 8.0 grades after (7 sales). The last 9.0 offered for $999.00 on eBay on 06/09/2019 as well as the last 8.0 offered for $500.00 someday later on 06/10/2019.

Iron guy #1 (April 1968) – very first problem of Iron guy titled series; continued from Iron guy & Namor the Submariner One Shot; origin retold

Don’t knock the value of covers in this age of slab as well as seal. Here’s one more renowned cover: ‘I am Iron Man’, shouts this Silver Age appeal of a cover by gene Colon. With a overall of 5, 418 copies on the CGC census as well as 9.8 licensed copies valued at $18,000.00, the long term returns mirror those on CA #100. strong positive numbers all across except for 1.8 (down unfavorable -2.3% after only 4 sales over the last 7 years). three month returns are as follows: a sharper decline in low as well as mid-grade than CA #100, however growth on the higher grades. 9.0 shows finest positive returns of +22.5% after 5 sales (last sale: 06/null

1979 marvel MICRONAUTS #1 – UNDERVALUED BRONZE essential

1979 marvel Micronauts #1 is my top speculation pick for both 2019 and 2020 for both short term and long term growth. featuring Baron Karza (Background Cover) Acroyear,  Arcturus Rann, Marionette, and Bug (left to right).  Go collect shows it up 43% in 9.8 CGC in the last 100 sales and has it up to #87 on the hottest comics list (up 791 spots). This is a essential Bronze Age issue with a ton of upside potential. This trend is only just beginning and here is why.

Micronauts were derived from the Japanese toy line Microman by Takara. first released in Japan in 1974 the toy line was the first 3.75″ figures and they were interchageable. The toy line took Japan by storm. In 1976 the us imported the line and it was licensed by the Mego corporation as the Micronauts. The toy line was highly successful and marvel Comics introduced the story line in 1979. It ran for 59 issues and 2 annuals in it’s initial run. Written by bill Mantlo with art by Michael Golden, Dave Cockrum, Sal Buscema, and Al Milgrom. This was arguably bill Mantlo’s best storyline he ever created. Mantlo was the one who persuaded marvel to purchase the comic book rights in the first place. He fell in love with them when his child received the action figures as a Christmas gift and wanted to create a story line that went with them.

Fast forward to 2009 and Hasbro acquires the rights to the Micronauts toy line and are teaming up with JJ Abrams and Paramount pictures to develop a live action film version of the franchise. Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick  were hired on as writers. Paul Wernick was quoted as saying “We’ve written a couple of drafts of Micronauts and it’s in the Paramount system now. We developed it with bad Robot, and it’s probably not what you might think of a Micronauts film would be. However, it’s very, very different and very, very cool.” These characters are not as well known so creatively sky is the limit on what they can create. bad Robot is a substantial up and coming production team with JJ Abrams at the helm.

In November 2015 Paramount announced it was planning a Micronauts film (Still in production). Hasbro and Paramount reportedly are creating their own film universe combining Micronauts, GI Joe, Visionairies: Knights of the magical Light, M.A.S.K., and ROM. The long production time was used to set up the new universe and it is expected to be spectacular and rival Marvel’s. With bad Robot and JJ Abrams this is sure to be something for the ages. In addition to the 2020 live action film release date Hasbro and Boulder Media limited have teamed up to bring a new animated TV series in 2019 to bring in a new generation of fans and freshness to the series.

Since the announcement that the film was back on the table and there was a scheduled release date of October 2020 this comic has shown wonderful growth. With a CGC 9.8 running $150 in October of 2018 this book has started its upward trend and now runs $240 on average up to a high of $300 realized at auction on Ebay recently. If both the Animated series in 2019 and the live action film in 2020 are a hit (and they will be) I can see a 9.8 in 2020 going for a significant premium. The added bonus is this is Marvels Bug’s first appearance which is an added area of growth potential. With 4 decades of toy lines, comics, TV series, manga magazines and films spanning both the us and Japan there is a substantial area of growth potential. Micronauts #8 (1st appearance of Captain Universe) would be the other essential issue. pick these up now while you still can afford to.

GOAT: REHAB by Amy Winehouse (2006)

THE greatest OF ALL TUNES (G.O.A.T.) is a series of posts, producing my 100 favorite songs of all time.  The master list is here, and I update it about every two weeks or when I have another 10 songs or so.
“They tried to make me go to rehab, but I said No No No.”  The song was a tongue-in-cheek look at the effects of alcoholism, but in retrospect after Winehouse’s tragic death it’s not very funny.

Amy first hit the scene with Frank, an album that got critical acclaim but didn’t break the artist in the U.S.  it was her follow up, the 5-time Grammy winning, multiple-platinum album Back to Black that made her one of the most popular female R&B acts in music history.  four years later, she drank herself to death.

Back to Black eschewed the jazz of Frank and stood squarely in the realm of the old Motown sound of the 1960s.  The music was supplied by the Dap-Kings (who regularly back another retro soul artist, Sharon Jones), and was produced by mark Ronson, who is now best known for his work with Bruno Mars.  There probably wouldn’t have been the opportunity for Ronson or Mars absent Winehouse blazing the path.

Rehab was exceptional because it took that standard doo-wop sound and used it to speak with blunt honesty about alcoholism, and genuinely put the listener in the mind of a drunk who is hell-bent on death and full of denial.  we all knew it was autobiographical, but we didn’t know it was foreseeing the future.

Further listening: Back to Black, F Me Pumps, You know That I’m No Good.
