BATMAN and ROBIN #14 (review)

I’ve been as hot on grant Morrison’s Batman and Robin title as I have been on any D.C. title, which is to say, I’ve been luke-warm.  a lot of of the DCU (Vertigo excluded) just doesn’t rock me.  but B&R has been solid from the beginning, due mainly to to the fact that author grant Morrison hasn’t allowed the book to descend into unexplained “insider” stuff beyond the reach of anybody who hasn’t studied Batman like the Torah.  Morrison usually allows too much to happen between panels (where nobody can see, Grant!) and doesn’t condescend to help new-ish readers follow along (I haven’t read everything you’ve ever written, dude!). but he hasn’t done that in Batman and Robin.  maybe it’s because he was there for the launch of issue #1, and really got to define the relationship between the characters?  Or maybe it’s because I was there for the launch of issue #1, so I can follow it better?  probably a little of both.

Anyway, Morrison makes references to the larger Batverse in this series, but he doesn’t use that mythology to drive the B&R story.  That makes the series fairly self-contained; no small feat in a world where there are at least six other Bat-books on the shelf every month.  I tried to count them once, but I couldn’t find them all among the forest of Deadpool titles.
With issue #14, he’s about 90 pages away from ending his run on the title (he’s leaving to do “Batman, Inc.”) and it looks like he’s (gasp!) actually going to wrap some things up.

The issue has scenes between Damian Wayne Robin and the Joker (at left) that recall the latter’s brutal bludgeoning of the former version of the former, so lots of years ago.  (It’s a story recounted in the exceptional new DVD “Batman: Under the Red Hood.”)  The dialogue is both creative and haunting, which is how Joker ought to be written (but normally isn’t).  Truly, it’s the best Joker stuff I’ve ever read.  In fact, it’s some of the best chilling psychopath stuff I’ve read, period.  and I’ve read a lot of chilling psychopath stuff.

And the art is amazing.  maybe the greatest compliment I can give is to say that Frazer Irving doesn’t make me miss Frank Quietly.  I’d say, in fact, that Morrison’s layered “less is more” narrative style works so well in B&R because of the artists.  The flow from panel to panel and page to page have unspoken transitions that help the book read a lot more like a story and less like a series of amazing thoughts and ideas (which, frankly, was the greatest weakness with Batman: R.I.P.).  I’m still a little lost in the Pyg storyline, but it’s amusing nonetheless.

The best part of the series is enjoying Dick Grayson go from solo-offshoot/mature sidekick to mentor and teacher, and enjoying Damian Wayne respond by going from being a wild, uncontrollable ball of hazardous fury (remember how he acted in issues #1-5?) to being . . . Well, a less uncontrollable ball of fury.  At least he’s ready to talk about it now.  and one suspects that this most current instance of hubris, which leads in issue #14 to Damian being trapped at the mercy of Joker, will help improve his attitude even more.

A new cold war launches IN image COMIC’S THE DEAD HAND

Media release — The #1 new York Times bestselling writer Kyle Higgins (C.O.W.L., HADRIAN’S WALL, Nightwing) and artist Stephen Mooney (Half past Danger, Grayson) join forces with Eisner Award-winning colorist Jordie Bellaire for an all-new series steeped in cold war history, mystery, and spy-thriller action in THE DEAD HAND. The series is set to launch this April.
THE DEAD HAND #1 introduces readers to Carter Carlson, a highly decorated operative during the cold War. but in the fall of 1991, as the Soviet Union collapsed, Carter discovered a secret that not only changed his life…but also altered the course of history. Now, in 2018, as the mysterious “Dead Hand” threatens to end the world once again, the only thing standing in its way is the relationship between an old spy and a little boy.

“The Dead Hand mixes my love of historical fiction and substantial action into one of the greatest stories I’ve ever written. It’s metal gear Solid, James Bond, and John le Carré all mixed into one comic,” said Higgins. “The end of the cold war is an exceptionally fascinating era—the proliferation of weapons and scientists from the Soviet Union, the complicated relationships between countries, the introduction of capitalism in Russia… it’s a terrific backdrop for a story about the end of the world.”

Mooney added: “I’m hugely ecstatic to be embarking on this thrilling cold war journey with Kyle, Jordie, and Clayton. The Dead Hand is exactly the type of sci-fi tinged espionage book I love as a reader, and I can’t wait for people to take a first step into this murky world. Be careful who you trust!”

THE DEAD HAND #1 (Diamond Code FEB180506) will be available on Wednesday, April 11th. The final buy cutoff for merchants is Monday, March 19th.

THE original DAREDEVIL RETURNS THE DEATH-DEFYING ‘DEVIL #1

Gail Simone and Walter Geovani will revive the original Daredevil in THE DEATH-DEFYING ‘DEVIL #1.
The press release follows:

Media release — Fwoosh! What sound effect does a boomerang make? find out this August when Dynamite releases THE DEATH-DEFYING ‘DEVIL #1 by Gail Simone and Walter Geovani! The Master of courage returns!

The nearly 80-year-old legendary superhero returns in a miniseries from Eisner-nominated writer Gail Simone (Birds of Prey, wonder Woman, Domino) and her longtime artistic collaborator Walter Geovani (Red Sonja, clean Room). Colorist Adriano Augusto (Red Sonja/Tarzan, KISS: Blood & Stardust) and prolific letterer Simon Bowland (Red Sonja, The Boys) round out the cast.

In this yarn inspired by Rod Serling, Bronze Age horror/mystery anthologies, and modern street-level heroics, the ‘Devil finds himself beaten and bloodied in the backyard of a ramshackle house building. The diverse cast of tenants take him in and across each issue they are explored in-depth. Each has their own distinct problems, while a unusual force also menaces the building as a whole. The ‘Devil makes it his mission to resolve all of these puzzles, even when he learns that one of his new neighbors is a traitor.

A whole legion of painterly artists are contributing covers to this blockbuster series. Riccardo Federici (Aquaman, Dark nights Metal: Dark Knights Rising) leads the pack, Tyler Kirkham (Deathstroke, green Lantern, teen Titans) has some fun with a spray effect, Ben Oliver (American Carnage) turns in a playing card-inspired cover featuring the villain Deadly dreaded Dragon, while fan-favorites Lucio Parillo (Vampirella, Red Sonja) and In-Hyuk Lee (Black Order, Spider-Geddon) strike renowned heroic poses. As a throwback for project Superpowers fans, a special incentive “Carve Out” cover features Alex Ross’s history-making depiction.

“I have been fascinated by the death Defying ‘Devil because I first saw him on the cover of Jim Steranko’s history of Comics. I had no idea who he was, but something about him looked menacing and compelling,” said writer Gail Simone. “Later, I got to read much more of the stories and they feel like a precursor to the modern street-level heroes we have today. The man throws razor boomerangs, how amazing is that? and I love working with Walter, he’s one of my many trusted artists. He can draw anything, but superheroes are his favorite and he’s never gotten to draw them!”

Echoing that enthusiasm is artist Walter Geovani, “This is my very first superhero comic! working with Gail is always a pleasure and an honor to me. The story is wonderful and she created interesting characters that I’m loving drawing.”

“The death Defying ‘Devil is the only person who has ever made that metal-spiked belt really work. Usually, it’s just someone at a punk show in in a suburban basement, scratching the hell out of their bass,” said editor Kevin Ketner. “So I am really looking forward to getting a lot deeper into this character and defying a little death with Gail and Walter.”

“The Death-Defying ‘Devil is one of my many favorite characters that we’ve ever published. We knew we had to wait for a writer of Gail’s boundless caliber before launching a new series,” said Nick Barrucci, Dynamite CEO and Publisher. “To reunite her with Walter and debut his first ever superhero work just sealed the deal on what will be an exciting series for fans!”

THE DEATH-DEFYING ‘DEVIL #1 will be solicited in diamond Comic Distributors’ June 2019 Previews catalog, the premier source of merchandise for the comic book specialty market, and slated for release in August 2019. Comic book fans are encouraged to preorder copies with their local comic book retailers. It will also be available for individual customer purchase through digital platforms courtesy of Comixology, Kindle, iBooks, Google Play, Dynamite Digital, ComicsPlus, and more!

Arsenic With Austen

Arsenic With Austen features an older woman, Emily, a widow and a college professor who’s feeling burnt out. then she gets the kind of news a lot of of us can only dream of. The aunt with whom she spent summers as a teenager has passed away, leaving Emily an remarkable house in a beach village, a well-stocked library, a grumpy housekeeper who’s an accomplished cook, and millions of dollars.

Emily moves back and swiftly finds herself set upon by a pushy real estate agent who wants to sell off her aunt’s properties; the tacky, perspiring mayor who can’t wait to bring “progress” to the town; and a slimy “cousin”, Brock, who isn’t delighted with his share of the inheritance. Not to mention her lost first love, the kid she spent those teenage summers with, who’s now the local sheriff. Some close to her aunt are suspicious of her sudden passing, especially with so much money to be made in developing the community into a commercial resort area.

I chose to read this new mystery by Katherine Bolger Hyde because of the literary title, although the actual connections are minimal. The Jane Austen quotes that begin each chapter are well-chosen, and Emily, about a third of the way through the book, makes a decision to read Persuasion, but beyond that, this isn’t particularly Austen-esque. (Unless I missed a parallel. I’ve read all the books but don’t recall the details particularly strongly.)

However, the setting is wonderful, the characters are either immensely likable or mustache-twirlingly evil, and the time spent with the cast enjoyable. Some will find the heroine’s turn towards religion in the later part of the book surprising, but I thought it was a pleasurable change from lots of other relaxing mysteries, considering that the support of a church is part of lots of people’s lives, particularly in times of stress.

Arsenic With Austen is intended to be the first in the “Crime With the Classics” mystery series. I’d read another. (The publisher supplied a digital review copy.)

2 from WE ARE SCIENTISTS

I am a huuuuuuge fan of like & Squalor, even if the band did indication with Virgin for it. It’s a great album–nonstop fun as well as thrills.

As for brain Thrust Mastery . . . Eh. Not so much. It’s got a few great tunes, however it’s a bit as well slick. They’ve lost their indie noise completely, as well as just noise like business alternate rock.

Live, though, they still kick ass.

Rockstar (Nickleback cover)-We Are Scientists

You Don’t understand My name (Alicia Keyes cover)-We Are Scientists

Asterios Polyp

It’s a pity that such an creatively accomplished work doesn’t have a story of the exact same high quality. Asterios Polyp is beautiful, with all type of formalist as well as craft techniques to push the medium of comics. however the characters are cliches as well as you’ve seen the material before, making it an eventually disappointing book, emptier than I really hoped it would be.

Asterios Polyp is an architect. Well, a professor, really, since the point is made early on that the building he styles haven’t been built. He teaches based on his paper constructions. He’s brilliant as well as lives the life of the mind, harsh to his trainees when he’s not sleeping with the female ones. He’s a self-obsessed showoff who believes about nobody however himself as well as is always right.

His spouse is a timid sculptor whose parents liked her sibling better, the opposite of him in every method possible. She lastly leaves him, although I was wondering what she saw in him in the very first place. It’s not remove in the book; their connection just is since it’s creatively apropos.

The dispute right here is heart vs. art, accomplishment vs. academia… traditional themes, so one would hope that author David Mazzucchelli would have something new to state about them. He doesn’t. Instead, it’s all about his technique. The number of gadgets you can demonstrate right here make this completely fit for a college program on graphic novels. It’s full of symbolism as well as evocative parallels. exactly how this story is told is unusual as well as unique. You might compose essays about the book’s building as well as its utilize of duality.

Stylistically, it’s glorious. Each character has a color, as well as they’re not the usual ones. Asterios is blue, ranging from electric to sky. His spouse is magenta (although seldom purely, since she’s more frequently part of the background). instead of black ink, purple often appears. Panels scatter across the page or pictures have no boundaries.

But again, the plot. Lightning burns down his home, destroying all his awards as well as records. Ooh, a fresh start! A visible picture of needing to begin again. He heads out to rural America, randomly, as well as discovers himself by working with his hands fixing cars. (One reason I discover it so strange that this book has gotten so much crucial praise is that it’s so anti-intellectual.)

Thankfully, I’m not the only one stating this emperor is lacking some robes. however the most damning indictment, I think, comes from my brother. He doesn’t checked out comics frequently, although he’s familiar with the classics (and his taste has always been much better than mine, which has a tendency to be more entertainment than art-centered). He’s likewise a professor of engineering who almost went into design instead. When he heard of this book, he begged to borrow my copy. After I leant it to him, he checked out with it as well as returned it, disappointed. I don’t want to put words in his mouth, however his reaction was along the lines of, “There’s not much heart there, is there? It’s awfully familiar.”

Archie on the Cover of Rolling stone

To promote Archie #608, out April 21, Archie Comics has released this Rolling stone magazine cover mockup hinting at the romance story between Archie as well as Valerie.

These type of mashups make me giggle. as well as you know, there is so much more Archie might be doing with the Pussycats characters, in a world of Pussycat Dolls. I like that the business explains Valerie as the “beautiful songwriter/bassist” of the band, emphasizing her innovative abilities. In this story, the Archies band as well as the Pussycats tour together, leading to romance as well as a tale that continues into problem #609, out may 26. (But don’t the guitars get in the way?)

I’m type of surprised that Rolling stone provided permission to utilize their logo, provided that they had legal difficulty (link no longer available) over cover reproductions late last year.
