JAY NASH-Letters from the lost

What a incredible album.

This is the tenth time Jay Nash has walked into a studio and recorded beautiful songs. “I am just a patron of the arts,” he says on “The Art Thief,” a song about struggling for his love and his craft. and it’s true. This is a man who writes visually about feelings–he tells stories with sadness and truth, songs that make you want to stop and sit still and listen. music implies something to Jay Nash–he’s not jsut doing it because it’s fun, he’s doing it because he has to.

“Sometimes you want to go home…Just a little bit of hope, you carry on.” he sings on “Sometimes.” and that’s exactly what this album feels like.

Available on may 14th here and on iTunes.

Legends of the Dark Knight: Jim Aparo HC

by Robert Greenberger

In 1968, Dick Giordano left Charlton Comics to join DC Comics as an editor, motivated to bring along a handful of talent. While Steve Ditko was the most recognizable artist to find over, with his work on The Creeper as well as Hawk & Dove hogging the spotlight, possibly the most innovative work was being done on a much more familiar character. Aquaman, a fairly staid feature, got a shot in the arm as Giordano assigned the series to writer Steve Skeates as well as artist Jim Aparo. With their browse for Mera story, they assisted propel sales as well as got people speaking about the function for the very first time in years.

As a result, Aparo’s artwork ended up being preferred as well as he was all of a sudden scooped up in the wake of Aquaman’s cancellation to work on features such as The Spectre as well as Phantom Stranger, however it was editor Murray Boltinoff who acknowledged the man’s flexibility as well as utilized him as Nick Cardy’s replacement on The take on as well as the Bold.

Aparo’s work, while similar to Neal Adams, had an energy as well as a grit to it that made it stand apart in the crowd. His work was clean as well as dynamic plus his flexibility shown vital as the Caped Crusader satisfied up with all way of hero as well as villain. In time he was promoted to Batman appropriate as well as ended up being carefully determined with the character for the 1970s-1990s. much of his work has gone unreprinted except for chosen showcase provides volumes including The Spectre, The Phantom Stranger, as well as The take on as well as the Bold. Finally, DC is collecting those B&B tales in full color beginning with Legends of the Dark Knight: Jim Aparo volume One. This book will gather B&B #98, 100-102 as well as 104-122 letting you see him deal with Batman together with Robin, eco-friendly Arrow, Black Canary, the teen Titans, Deadman, question Woman, The Demon, The Joker, Aquaman, as well as The Atom. If you haven’t seen these before, you are in for a treat.

If nothing else, Bob Haney’s scripts are packed with intrigue as well as adventure, atmospheric as well as explosive, spotlighting Aparo’s storytelling strengths.

Keeper of the Aquaman Shrine, Rob Kelly, told me, “Jim Aparo’s work brought a sense of seriousness as well as practically an film noir-ish feeling of risk to Aquaman, which was a ideal complement to the much more high-stakes, character-driven scripts of Steve Skeates.

“Aparo had important, unforgettable runs on Aquaman in both the ‘60s as well as the ‘70s (in Aquaman as well as experience Comics, respectively), cementing his credibility to numerous Aqua-Fans as THE Aquaman artist, a remarkable achievement thinking about the Sea King has had numerous so fine artists illustrating his adventures.

“He was one of Charlton’s top talents, as well as when he moved on to DC he ended up being of their top talents. Whether it be the jungle adventures of The Phantom, the groovy comedy of Tiffany Sinn, C.I.A. Agent, the fantasy world of Aquaman, or the gritty metropolitan world of Batman, Aparo might deal with any type of function as well as make it distinctive.”

Batman & the Joker by Aparo.

Meantime, Jim Beard, an professional on the artist’s legacy, noted, “Back when I was cutting my comic book teeth, there were two artists who defined ‘my’ Batman: Irv Novick as well as Jim Aparo. What an incredible thing, to make your indelible mark on a character who’s been handled by a multitude of creators over a number of decades. Aparo’s Caped Crusader stands apart in stark contrast to other such interpretations in my mind, the type of visual style you search for after the original is gone as well as to which nobody else rather steps up.

“The essential Aparo book for me will always be, of course, The take on as well as the Bold. That was the title where you looked ahead to every single problem to see what Jim’s grace as well as style would do for each of Batman’s co-stars; his was a clean line as well as clearness of vision that just might refrain from doing any type of character any type of damage whatsoever. For such a peaceful guy, his dynamism as well as detail leapt off the page. Boy, do I miss him in this contemporary industry.

“Any book, any type of job at all, that seeks to encapsulate Jim Aparo’s work in a single area for all to see as well as question at exactly how he did it is a great thing indeed.”

Trust us three; this is one book you don’t want to miss, back when the DC world was vibrant with solid composing as well as fantastic artwork.

FOO A to Z (live, covers, and very rarities)

I did a Foo A to Z about a year ago or so. Actually, it was a whole week of Foo. It didn’t go down too well. guess my readers weren’t fans back then. I’m trying again because they are one of my top 5 favorite rock bands ever.

And I didn’t even like Nirvana that much.

A is for Arms large open (Creed Cover)-Dave Grohl. Dave did another version of this during a soundcheck for some cord TV show. I’ve heard it, but I don’t have it. It was called “Legs large open,” and it was about a strip joint. If anybody out there has it, I’d be in your debt if you’d send it. Been trying to find it for years.

B is for Back in Black (ACDC cover)-Foo Fighters (live).

C is for The Colour and the Shape-Foo Fighters (live). The unreleased title track from their best album, a really keen live recording. It’s pretty rare that they do this tune.

D is for DOA (video). You can get it for complimentary off their official webside.

E is for Eddie Money! baby Hold On To Me (Eddie Money)-Foo Fighters

F is for the fab Four! Blackbird (beatles cover)-Foo Fighters. An interesting hard rock version of this mellow classic tune. It’s a little disjointed (punk) at first, but let it clear up in.

G is for I’m Gonna Puke (live version of Overdrive)-The Foo Fighters.

H is for Haden! Floaty-Petra Haden and bill Frisell. This cover is from a genuinely terrific album by Petra and Bill. Petra actually played some acoustic gigs with the Foos after she recorded this. A highly recommended purchase.

I is for I’ll Stick around (live version)-Foo Fighters

J is for hi Johnny Park!-Foo Fighters (live acoustic version).

K is for Kiss the bottle (Jawbreaker cover)-Foo Fighters.

L is for Lemmy! Shake Your Blood-The Foo Fighters with Lemmy from Motorhead (live version).

M is for My Hero-Paramore (Foo Fighters cover).

N is for No Action-Foo Fighters and never talking to You again (Husker Du cover)-Foo Fighters (live)

O is for Lyla (live Oasis cover)-Foo Fighters

P is for Pokey the Puppy (demo)-Dave Grohl.

Q is for the question, “Why?” As in, why is any individual covering this lame novelty song, let alone two terrific guitar player/songwriters within a year of each other? maybe this must have been an “S” entry, for synergy.

8675309 Jenny (Tommy Tutone)-Foo Fighters

8675309 Jenny (live Tommy Tutone)-Patterson Hood (of the Drive By Truckers)

R is for Razor (live version)-The Foo Fighters.

S is for sweet home Alabama (Lynyrd Skynrd cover)-Foo Fighters (live).

T is for throwing Needles-Foo Fighters. This is from the popular “Pocketwatch Demo tape.” a lot of demos are pretty lame, but this one was pretty good. This is the best tune on it, but he also did a version of “Friend of a Friend,” which didn’t hit wax until years later.

U is for Underground. The tale of the Beaconsfield miners moved Dave so much that he wrote a personal letter and then this song, in tribute. It hasn’t been released as a studio version yet, and this is a pretty crappy version, but it’s so rare that he gets political or topical that it’s amazing to hear it. Ballad of the Beaconsfield Miners-Foos.

W is for Weenie Beenie (live version)-Foo Fighters.

X is for an X-mas song! Satan’s Away in a Manger-Dave Grohl (live)

Z is for Zip file.

24 hour Comic: A Documentary

The 24-hour comic started in 1990 as a creative exercise Scott McCloud (Understanding Comics) posed to his pal Steve Bissette as a speed challenge. The goal is for an artist to create 24 pages in 24 hours. because then, it’s become a day for cartoonists to gather, stretch their talent, and commiserate. (It’s now held the first Saturday in October.)

Milan Erceg has made a documentary about the phenomenon, 24 hour Comic, that complies with eight cartoonists trying the challenge at a comic store in Portland, Oregon. It’s now available for preorder with digital availability on July 11. Those eight artists are:

Paul Guinan (Boilerplate)

David Chelsea (movie co-producer)

Rebecca Celsi (David’s 13-year-old daughter)

Tom Lechner

Rachel Nabors

Sera Stanton

Jacob Mercy (who works as an assistant to Chelsea) and Pete Soloway (who with Jacob has produced Pizza Gun, last updated in 2015)

From interior evidence, such as the existence of Andrew McIntire, then vice-president of things From another World, the store where this was filmed, I believe the event was held in 2013. also participating in the 70-minute film are Mike Richardson (founder of Dark horse Comics and the things From another world retail chain), Scott Allie (Dark horse editor-in-chief), cartoonist Batton Lash, Scott McCloud (explaining the premise), and different late-night drunk store customers.

It was interesting to see how the cartoonists reacted as the night went on. It was like being there without having to be there. The creative variety was well-chosen, even if put together by accident, with one cartoonist utilizing a fountain pen, another a tablet computer. One person has tried the challenge 7 or 8 times and never succeeded, while Chelsea has completed fifteen 24-hour comics.

Erceg complies with up with the participants individually, checking out the themes of imagination and what drives people to make comics. For example, Stanton (now understood as Opal Pence) talked about working in a bookstore and cafe in purchase to make her comics. Guinan specifies he’s not able to make comics for money and has to do other things for income, while he’s working on his 24-hour comic as a pitch piece for media rate of interest in his character.

After early success, Nabors stop comics in 2007 because she needed surgical treatment and couldn’t pay for it. (She would likely have done much better in our new age of crowdfunding.) She’s now “a web person much more than a comics person”. Comics are a location for self-expression — and it’s treated as a medium, not a genre — yet the company elements are what get in people’s way. Taking a full day away to highlight imagination instead of wondering “what will this become” is therefore the ideal contrast. Here’s the trailer:

I only had two complaints. Sometimes, it takes the cameraperson a long time to focus the show on what you’re expected to be looking at, making for some temporarily fuzzy images. and I wasn’t sure whether everyone succeeded in the 24-hour comics goal. With five, it was clearly shown whether they completed or not, but the three others, I wasn’t sure of their final outcome.

24 hour Comic is going on my shelf next to animation college and She Makes Comics as considerable documentaries about essential moments in comics. It’s also an official choice of the 2017 Comic-Con worldwide Independent film Festival, so the documentary will be shown on Saturday, July 22, in San Diego.

G.O.A.T.: Alison and enjoying the Detectives by Elvis Costello (1977)

THE greatest OF ALL TUNES (G.O.A.T.) is a series of posts, producing my 100 favorite songs of all time.  The master list is here, and I update it about every two weeks or when I have another 10 songs or so. ideal now, I’m adding my 13th and 14th songs to the list: Elvis Costello’s Alison and enjoying the Detectives.

Elvis Costello has created over a dozen songs that are a lot of excellent.  Radio Radio.  Veronica.  The Angels want to wear My Red Shoes.  Oliver’s Army.  Pump It Up.  accidents will Happen.  everyday I write the Book.  On and on.  but I’m saying these two songs, both from My goal is True.  Alison was the “B” side to the single “Welcome the working Week,” and a line from the chorus served as the album’s title.  Why did I pick this song, one that Costello himself has said is not one of his best?  because he’s wrong.  It is.

It’s a fairly standard ballad, albeit one with an opening chord that is beautiful enough to make your heart break and lyrics that still break me whenever I hear them.  “I know this world is killing you…”  It just kills me.  then when he says, “Somebody better put out the big light because I can’t stand to see you this way…”  how lots of of us put the ones we love centerstage in our lives, only to be disappointed or hurt—and then find we can’t look away?

So it may not be his a lot of influential song, and didn’t even hit the sales charts, but it’s my favorite.

And as for enjoying the Detectives, well, it’s terrific.  “She’s filing her nails while they’re dragging the lake.”  “She looks so good that he breaks down and begs.”  “You think you’re alone until you realize you’re in it/now concern is here to stay, love is here for a visit.”  Lyric after lyric.  and that bassline.  it all creeps forward with menace and gravitas.

So, where do these songs fall on my list?  Well, let’s do “Detectives” first.  ideal now, Alanis Morisette is sitting at #7, ideal below Biggie Smalls’ “Juicy.”  I’m putting Detectives between those two.  then Alison is going a little farther down, just above Clipse.  So here’s how #s 6-11 are changed today:

6. Juicy by Notorious B.I.G. (1994) (link)
7. enjoying the Detectives by Elvis Costello (1977)
8. Ironic by Alanis Morissette (1995) (link)
9. somebody told Me by The Killers (2004)(link)
10. Tonight the streets Are Ours by Richard Hawley (2007) (link)
11. Misfits by the Kinks (1978) (link); and: Covers of the top 30 Kinks songs here and here
12. Alison by Elvis Costello (1977)

Life & death of Ferro Lad

by Josh Crawley

For some reason the past few years, the winter season puts me in the mood to checked out legion of Super-Heroes. While i don’t have a excellent number of legion comics, my collection of them grows slowly every year. The past two years have been particularly excellent for reprint collections, whether it’s the many showcase provides collections, An Eye for an Eye complied with up by The more things modification by Paul Levitz, Keith Giffen & Co., or the book I’m itching to get to soon, The Life & death of Ferro Lad (as part of the DC Comics classics library hardcover line). If you’re thinking about reading some L.o.S.H. yourself, 1,050 Years of the Future has a excellent sampling from many eras. (Normally I’d be torn about recommending excellent Darkness Saga, because of the lack of a excellent introduction/set-up), however it’s out of print for some reason. My assumption would be DC is waiting to make it an entry in the previously mentioned DC Comics classics library line, however at this point I wouldn’t hold my breath. After all, this is the business that has let born to Run as well as terminal Velocity (two outstanding Wally West Flash stories by mark Waid & Co.) go out of print.

And on that tangent, time for some quick link-blogging, as well as then I’m out of here. as well many holiday gifts to get completed (and as well much Phantom hourglass to play).

‡ I don’t have much by mark Schultz. Most, if not all, of what I have are comics he’s written. I have ended up being a excellent fan of his art (even if some people just think about him a “poor man’s version” of Al Williamson). I’ve truly enjoyed looking at the different Drawings books Flesk publications has put out, however I’ve never bought any type of of them. I believe I’ve discovered the very first one. Blue book will not be offered with book or comic stores, so be sure you comply with the link for details. It seems like a high high quality version of an ashcan you’d buy at a convention, however I truly don’t mind; 8.5 by 5.5 inches is nice size for preliminary artwork.

‡ last week you may keep in mind me discussing X Necrosha: The Gathering, which had some coloring by my good friend Chad Fidler. Well, he just recently published a few of the colored, non-lettered pages in his deviantART gallery. He likewise published pages from Witchblade #88 (written by Ron Marz as well as collected in Witchblade volume 2: Awakenings) that he worked on, in addition to more top Cow work as well as Athena Voltaire pages!

Parker the Hunter

‡ It seems a bit early for end of/Best of the Year lists, however they’re out there. looking at the Barnes as well as Noble listing (by Douglas Wolk), I made an fascinating observation: I haven’t checked out any type of of them. Not in full, anyways (Final Crisis). I do want to checked out Luba, as well as the others all noise interesting. as well as the Honorable Mentions I haven’t even partially read, however I definitely want to checked out Darwyn Cooke’s Parker The hunter adaptation as well as Scott Pilgrim volume 5. I’m believing of working on my own list, however I usually end up forgetting stuff. Plus, I like to really wait up until after the end of the year. I’ll most likely just end up doing my own listing after I checked out a lot of others to remind myself what came out this year.

‡ ever wondered exactly how comics went primarily from newsstands to comics book stores? Jim McLauchlin of Hero effort published a nice essay on Phil Seuling, the response to your question.

Gossip Girl

‡ While I don’t always agree with her, Johanna Draper Carlson’s comments on the Gossip woman manga preview were quite much area on. as well as no, I will not admit to understanding anything else about Gossip Girl.
