Archie Cancelling Betty?

during the discussion resulting from my publish on last year’s Archie sales patterns, the concern of whether the business had cancelled some titles came up. A commenter pointed out that Betty as well as Archie & good friends had been taken off the company’s membership sales page. This Archie fan thread mentions:

Betty‘s last problem solicited so far is #191 out in March
Archie as well as good friends is running at least til #154 because of the bit Archie story being promoted out in April.

But a recommendation in the Veronica solicits states that a story will continue in Betty #192. somebody else declares they got confirmation of the cancellations from Mr. Goldwater, co-CEO of the company, who pointed out an “overall revamping”. When I asked their press contact, the statement I got back said:

There are no plans to cancel ARCHIE & good friends or BETTY at this time. We’re commonly updating as well as tweaking what’s made offered on our store. The momentary absence of the titles shouldn’t be taken as a indication that they’re ending.

That’s about what I expected — as well as it’s not wrong. If this brings a lot more attention, as well as sales enable Betty to continue, then we anxious for nothing. If they don’t, then plans altered from the time that statement was made. as well as this wouldn’t be the very first time that advertising contradicted business insiders in buy not to cause a additionally sales drop. then again, we are speaking about a publisher that revealed they’d be renaming Archie & good friends in 2008, as well as that never happened.

Since I like reading about the blonde woman next door, I’d be unfortunate if the title ended as well as Veronica’s book continued. It appears like I must get utilized to disappointment, considering that according to this fan’s report from the membership department, “The final problem for Archie as well as good friends is 156 as well as Betty will be 193. Both will be out this summer.”

FUN by BULLDOG EYES

This is a shitload of music, and not every tune is a winner. It’s highly experimental stuff. but the good news is, if you don’t like a track, it’ll be short and end soon. lots of the tunes here feel like pieces or ideas, not yet fully formed, not yet complete. I found myself compelled to listen all the method through.

But whatever you do, don’t stop before you hear the Cardigans’ cover, “Carnival,” and cheap Trick’s, “Surrender.”

2011 EISNER awards

The nominees for this year’s Eisner awards have been announced.  only the most significant of nerds really care.  So if you’re not them, skip this post.  I bet the next one will have a funny picture, anyway.  but if you’re one of my nerdy faithful, hit the break for my take on some of the major categories…..

Best single issue (or One-Shot)

Nominees:
The Cape, by Joe Hill, Jason Ciaramella, and Zack Howard (IDW)
Fables #100, by bill Willingham, mark Buckingham, and others (Vertigo/DC)
Hellboy: double feature of Evil, by Mike Mignola and Richard Corben (Dark Horse)
Locke & Key: keys to the Kingdom #1: “Sparrow,” by Joe hill and Gabriel Rodriguez (IDW)
unknown Soldier #21: “A gun in Africa,” by Joshua Dysart and Rick Veitch (Vertigo/DC)

It’s no shocker that Joe (“Stephen King’s son”) hill got four noms total—with two in this category alone.  Comicdom loves it when real novelists embrace our genre.  That said, I’m hoping unknown Soldier pulls this one out.  It’s really a spectacular series—and comics rarely embrace political themes (and when they do so, they tend to be hamfisted about it).  The series is deep and complex, as well as emotionally moving and even, maybe, informative.  My second choice would be to give it to Hellboy, if only because Mignola has done so much for the world of comics—from supporting indies to showing that major films based on comics could hew true to the printed mythos.

Best Writer/Artist

Dan Clowes, Wilson (Drawn & Quarterly)
Darwyn Cooke, Richard Stark’s Parker: The outfit (IDW)
Joe Kubert, Dong Xoai, Vietnam 1965 (DC)
    Terry Moore, Echo (Abstract Studio)
James Sturm, Market Day (Drawn & Quarterly)
Naoki Urasawa, Naoki Urasawa’s 20th Century young boys (VIZ Media)

Joe gets my vote on principle alone.  best war-comic developer ever, no question.

Best continuing Series

Chew, by John Layman and Rob Guillory (Image)
Echo, by Terry Moore (Abstract Studio)
Locke & Key, by Joe hill and Gabriel Rodriguez (IDW)
morning Glories, by Nick Spencer and Joe Eisma (Shadowline/Image)
Naoki Urasawa’s 20th Century Boys, by Naoki Urasawa (VIZ Media)
Scalped, by Jason Aaron and R. M. Guéra (Vertigo/DC)

Really?  So nothing marvel or mainstream DC is better than Locke and essential or Scalped?  Not even Deadpool MAX?  Hmm.  These awards are usually pretty snobby, I suppose.  I don’t really “get” Chew and I haven’t read Echo or 20th Century Boys.  Locke and essential bored me.  So I’ll choose Scalped.  I don’t always love it, but I typically like it.  and in some cases I love it.  I think I’d love it much more if it were bigger–Guera’s art typically seems cramped and dark.

Best limited Series

Baltimore: The afflict Ships, by Mike Mignola, Christopher Golden, and Ben Stenbeck (Dark Horse)
Cinderella: From Fabletown with Love, by Chris Roberson and Shawn McManus (Vertigo/DC)
Daytripper, by Fábio Moon and Gabriel Bá (Vertigo/DC)
Joe the Barbarian, by grant Morrison and Sean Murphy (Vertigo/DC)
Stumptown, by Greg Rucka and Matthew Southworth (Oni)

I can’t argue with any of these except the Fables stuff.  Not a fan.  any of these would be fine winners.  but if I were picking, I’d choose Stumptown.  I loves me some Greg Rucka.

Best new Series

American Vampire, by Scott Snyder, Stephen King, and Rafael Albuquerque (Vertigo/DC)
iZombie, by Chris Roberson and Michael Allred (Vertigo/DC)
    Marineman, by Ian Churchill (Image)
morning Glories, by Nick Spencer and Joe Eisma (Shadowline/Image)
Superboy, by Jeff Lemire and Pier Gallo (DC)

So much horror, so little time.  because I didn’t like American Vampire or iZombie (and I’m not scared to admit it), I’ll pull for morning Glories here.  I haven’t read much more than one issue because I’m waiting for the trade, but I liked what I saw.

Best Writer

Ian Boothby, who writes Simpsons books (Bongo)
Joe Hill, Locke & essential (IDW)
    John Layman, Chew (Image)
Jim McCann, Return of the Dapper men (Archaia)
Nick Spencer, morning Glories, Shuddertown, Forgetless, existence 3.0 (Image)

Again with the indie snobbery?  Do we really want the Eisner awards to disregard the two publishers who actually make money and generate new readers on a regular business?  Anyway, of these I’m choosing Spencer again.  Or Boothby—the Simpson comics are actually pretty damn good.

I’m also going to throw in two plugs for some nominated works that I think are worth your time and money:

·         The Marvelous Land of Oz, by L. Frank Baum, adapted by Eric Shanower and Skottie young (Marvel) is nominated for best adaptation.  It’s well-written, but the real star is Skottie Young, who in my view is one of the most innovative, exciting comic artists working today.

·         Nominated for “Best U.S. edition of international Material” is The Killer: Modus Vivendi, by Matz and Luc Jacamon (Archaia Press).  It’s a book that’s so different, sonull

BETWEEN two SHORES by GLEN HANSARD

before I evaluation this album, which I really, truly liked, inspect out this tribute to David Bowie–in situation you missed it.

That tells you a great deal about exactly how earnestly Glen Hansard likes rock as well as roll. now for the evaluation of his most current album:

I hope Van Morrison is happy. A few years ago, Hozier issued a tremendously great as well as fantastically successful Van-inspired album, as well as now Glen Hansard evokes the exact same type of yearning balladry on a number of tunes on his new album, “Between two Shores.” Of course, Hansard doesn’t have the Van Morrison voice (and neither did Hozier). few people do. however he has the heart as well as the power as well as the wish to craft old-fashioned rhythm-and-blues tunes that touch the heard as well as make the head bob.

Between two Shores is a traditional rock album at heart. There’s even a tune called, “Wheels on Fire,” which must make you believe of Cream. That tune is undoubtedly psychedelic, however instead of grinding guitars, Hansard’s voice is what drives the tune home–punched up with horns as well as powerful drums. tune after song, Hansard tells of damaged hearts as well as dreaming loves, with a specificity that leaves no question as to the deeply personal nature of this album. Pitchfuck called this “meandering” as well as provided it a 5.7. They’re wrong. extremely wrong. perhaps it’s since you don’t hear music such as this almost as much anymore–and the world of music is suffering for it. tunes that are created to be listened to–not playing overhead in Starbucks. As I survey the internet, the evaluations for this record are quite tepid. That frequently makes me think, perhaps I’m wrong for liking it so much, however not this time. This is an album made just for me. It’s perfect. The evaluations seem to state it’s not as great as Hansard’s work with Swell Season, or as his last work, however they requirement to listen with fresh ears. I understand I’ll be listening to it years from now, as well as I bet these movie critics would, too, if they weren’t trying to find something different.

This album recalls the very best of artists like Bruce Springsteen, Glen Campbell (or Ryan Adams, for something a lot more modern), and, of course, the afore-mentioned Van Morrison. as well as if you’re going to draw from the past, that’s a mighty deep as well as fertile well.
Between two Shores by Glen Hansard

BOB FINGERMAN’S minimum WAGE GOES maximum IN MARCH

Media release — Fumbling lives and loves, a new York City so real you can smell it, people with everyday problems and hopes — this is the world of Bob Fingerman’s minimum Wage, a slice-of-life comic that captured a devoted following in the late 1990s. one of that following is Robert Kirkman, who writes the introduction to the definitive edition of Fingerman’s seminal work, maximum minimum WAGE, a hardcover collection to be released in March.
“Minimum Wage is an important comic,” Kirkman writes in the introduction. “If I were tasked with introducing someone to comics in an attempt to make them love and cherish the medium as much as I do, I’d give them Watchmen, Bone, savage Dragon, and minimum Wage.”

At the center of minimum Wage are Rob and Sylvia, a freelance cartoonist and a beauty salon manager — young, in love, and just trying to make their way to their real lives. An array of vivid characters and new York City “personalities” round out the supporting cast. Fingerman’s previous collection of minimum Wage, Beg the question was nominated for two 2003 Eisner awards (Best graphic novel — Reprint and best publication Design), one 2003 Harvey award (Best graphic album of previously published Work), and one 2003 Ignatz award (Outstanding graphic novel or Collection).

MAXIMUM minimum WAGE includes the “lost” first issue of minimum Wage, minimum Wage book One, as well as the script for the never-drawn eleventh issue, and an impressive collection of pin-ups by top comics artists, including Peter Bagge, guy Davis, Dean Haspiel, Gilbert Hernandez, Joe Infurnani, Roger Langridge, Kevin Nowlan, Dave Johnson, Ted McKeever, Mike Mignola, Jill Thompson and more!

A 384-page, black-and-white hardcover book (with 16 pages in full-color), maximum minimum WAGE will be in stores on March 20 and retail for $34.99. Its ISBN is 978-1-60706-674-3.

PRAISE FOR BOB FINGERMAN

“Fingerman is a brilliant satirist, artist and mind.” ? Trey Parker (South Park, The book of Mormon)

“Bob Fingerman is a narrative master, as brilliantly adept with words as with images. His vision is urbane, riotous, and unflinching.” ? Jonathan Lethem (The Fortress of Solitude, Omega: The Unknown)

“Mr. Fingerman is a deeply talented, creative, and disturbed man.” — Max Brooks (World war Z)

“It doesn’t seem fair that Bob Fingerman gets to be such a funny, savvy, amazing and smart writer who can also draw. It gives him an advantage and I may need to have him assassinated.” — Augusten Burroughs (Running With Scissors)

PRAISE FOR BOB FINGERMAN’S minimum WAGE (previous editions):

“Fingerman’s visual style is a witty combo of old-school underground-comics grunginess and new-school precision; his dialogue [is worthy of] the stage — it’s terrific screwball-comedy byplay that rings true. A-” — entertainment Weekly

“Fingerman’s dialogue is biting and realistic, and his drawing is exceptional.” — Publishers Weekly

“Beg The Question’s episodic, interwoven tales of career disappointments and romantic complications take on the mesmeric quality of a good soap opera…the writing and the art contain plenty of stark, truthful moments.” — The A.V. Club

“Fingerman depicts their eventful if directionless lives with humor and empathy… anyone who has lived or envied la vie boheme should relate to this dead-on evocation of a contemporary version of it.” — Booklist

“Beg the question is a coming-of-age graphic novel for twenty-somethings and anyone who remembers being that age. It is a funny, heartwarming, and poignant work. It helps make the case for comics being THE terrific American art form.” — The Comic Buyers’ Guide

“…a meticulous, smutty, hilarious quasi-autobiographical slice of life about a young cartoonist maintaining grownup relationships while struggling to rise from the ‘low-end of the new York food chain.’ funny if you’ve been there, even funnier if you still are.” — The new York Press

Batman and Robin #13 – review

I’ve really enjoyed grant Morrison’s Batman & Robin title—much more than any of his prior Batman work. Usually, his stuff feels fragmented to me. It seems like he’s planting a bunch of seeds, but I never feel like they all work together or make sense. “Batman and Robin,” on the other hand, has already opened and closed a few distinct arcs and with issue #13, Morrison appears to be ready to bring together several of the remaining open plotlines. most of all, the story actually makes sense—there’s enough linear progress that the reader can pay attention to the development of Dick and Damian. Grayson has become increasingly competent and confident (although in issue #13 he makes some pretty bad missteps), and the brashness of Damian’s youth is put to excellent use in this latest installment. In it, Joker is in custody and Batman, Robin, and the Gotham PD are interrogating him. and it looks like Robin is the guy most willing to do anything.
The issue also introduces a new regular artist, Frazer Irving. I was reluctant to accept him, because the last two artists on this series, but it turns out his use of light and dark are a perfect compliment to an increasingly frightening title. It almost feels like this should be a “D.C. Knights” title—if there were such a thing. It’s mature, scary, violent, and threatening. Morrison is willing to allow his Grayson-Batman to fail, and to allow his Wayne-Robin to be even more violent than Grayson was in Frank Miller’s All-Star Batman and Robin. We’ve never seen this before in the world of comics, where an iconic sidekick takes the place of his iconic leader, and the iconic leader’s son takes on the role of the sidekick. The role reversal is providing Morrison with fertile ground, and he’s making very good use of it. Let’s hope he keeps the seeds growing. I honestly can’t tell where he’s headed once Bruce returns. and that’s
exciting.
