INTERVIEW: PAUL TOBIN ON DARK HORSE’S mystery girl

Mystery girl #1

Paul Tobin is the writer of such comics as Bandette, Colder, Jungle Jim, The Witcher, and more. His new series from Dark Horse, mystery Girl, features a woman with an fantastic power who has no idea where the power came from. Westfield’s Roger Ash recently contacted Tobin to learn a lot more about this upcoming series.

Westfield: From the solicitation, we know that Trine Hampstead can answer any question except for why she knows these things and what happened the last 10 years of her life. What direction do you take that premise in the series? A different way to ask it is… is this a mystery book, an adventure book, etc?

Paul Tobin: I consider it an adventure book with a mystery background. I love the classic like the Tintin books, and Hugo Pratt’s Corto Maltese, and such things as Caniff’s Terry & the Pirates, and I wanted to bring some of those elements into the comics, all seen through the eye of what I really take pleasure in in storytelling, which is the exploration of character. As a reader, I never take pleasure in any premise unless I take pleasure in the characters involved, and if I take pleasure in the characters, I find that I can take pleasure in nearly any premise. So, that’s where I focus, on the characters, and then I just let the stories explode from there. In mystery Girl, I’m keeping things pretty grounded in the real world, but there will be touches of fantasy, too. I never want Trine to be too comfortable.

Westfield: What was the genesis of the series?

Tobin: I’ve been wanting to do a mystery comic for a long time, but I couldn’t ever quite clear up on exactly how I wanted to do it, the hook that would make my story different than a hundred others. but one thing that I’ve always had in my mind is the ramifications of stories. Those women that Batman saves in the alley still have to go on with their lives. Those people that Mike Hammer beat up in the alley have to pay their healthcare facility bills. And, when Sherlock Holmes solves a mystery, he walks off, but he leaves behind all these people who have to go on with their lives after finding out, for instance, that the oldest kid was the murderer, and that the family’s fortunes are in ruin. THAT’S what I wanted to talk about in mystery stories, the gut punch of what happens afterwards. So, I made a decision it was a mystery story, but the detective… Trine, in this case… could simply know all the answers. and then we find out that knowing all the answers leads to a whole lot of problems.

Westfield: What can you tell us about Trine?

Tobin: She’s a lively young woman with an ability she can’t really understand, and that haunts her some, because she can’t fix the mystery of how she became like she is. At the same time, she loves art, and she loves helping people, and she’s a fan of having a good drink now and then. She’s a bit ruthless, too, when she needs to be, because she’s a woman that knows that often there’s no mystery at all: often you just gotta do what you gotta do.

Westfield: aside from Trine, who are some of the other characters we’ll meet?

Tobin: There’s Algie, who’s Trine’s mentor in a manner of speaking, considering that he’s a flamboyant detective… but how much detective mentoring can you do for a woman who already knows the answers. and there’s a whole group of regular sidewalk friends, considering that Trine sets up her daily “office” quite literally on the sidewalk. plus there’s Ken, a policeman who is almost-but-not-exactly Trine’s boyfriend. and there’s a killer I’ve been having a lot of fun writing: a smirking bit of evil that’s good with a gun and bad with morality.

Westfield: What can readers look forward to in the story?

Tobin: interesting characters and a romping adventure. I think it’s crucial to blend the two. It’s like how comics as a medium are a blend of words and pictures, and fail if they don’t both carry their weight. That’s how I feel about a good story: it needs the action, but also the characters within the action.

Westfield: You’re working with artist Alberto Alburquerque on mystery Girl. What can you say about your collaboration with him?

Tobin: It’s been great! some of the things I look for in a co-creator are a strong sense of storytelling, which he has, and ability to draw actual crowd scenes, which he has, and consistent characters with emotional range, which Alberto can do. Really, his only weakness is that he’s a fan of the wrong soccer team, the arch rivals of my favorite team, but I forgive him for this failing because he’s so good in so lots of other ways.

Westfield: are there other projects you’re working on that you’d like to mention?

Bandette Vol. 1: Presto!

Tobin: There’s Bandette, my collaboration with my wife. We’ve been very delighted with the reception our captivating teen thief has elicited, with seven Eisnernominations to date. and of course there’s Colder, my horror series with Juan Ferreyra. The toss the Bones arc, the third and final arc, is currently being released. Juan and I are kicking around ideas for what we want to do together next, and I can say it’s going to be great. I’ve also been having fun on the Plants vs. Zombies comics, and I’ll start releasing my first series of novels near the start of the new year, a five-book series with Bloomsbury. It’s called genius Factor, the adventures Nathan Bannister, a 5th grade genius as he fights against the Red death Tea Society, in stories seen through the eyes of his classmate Delphine Cooper. and there are other novels and comics I can’t talk about yet, so I keep quite busy.

Westfield: any closing comments?

Tobin: just that, it’s an fantastic time both as a designer and a reader for comics, and it’s wonderful to be a part of both sides!

FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION: MARVEL’S THOR BY WALTER SIMONSON OMNIBUS

Thor By Walter Simonson Omnibus

by Robert Greenberger

Marvel’s Omnibus program has produced a number of deserving collections of material at budget-friendly costs provided the sheer volume of material you get between the covers. While many of these have come from the dawn of the marvel Age, their March release comes from the 1980s as well as this run of Thor is possibly one of the very best bodies of work created in contemporary times.

Walter Simonson was no complete stranger to Asgard, having previously illustrated a series of stories written by Len Wein. before then, he told me, “I was reading Thor comics back in the 1960s. as well as for me, the highlight of the run was from journey into secret #114 with Thor #139 or thereabouts. That was the stuff I was truly reading as it was being published, as well as I was blown away by. I was influenced by it.”

So, when mark Gruenwald invited Walter to compose as well as draw the series, he was much more than ready. as well as now, the entire run from Thor #337-355, #357-369, #371-382 as well as Balder the take on #1-4 is being packaged in Thor by Walter Simonson Omnibus.

It was this prime Stan Lee/Jack Kirby run that influenced Simonson to craft a Thor tale as a teen visitor as well as he returned to those core ideas for his very first storyline. “At that time, in Thor, there was a huge blade called the Odinsword, which sat in Asgard,” he explained. “There was no history for it. It was essentially a huge blade lying in a huge scabbard. The legend around it was that if somebody ever withdrew the blade from the scabbard, the world would end.

“My contribution to that part of the story was to provide the Odinsword a history. It was the blade of Surtur, a terminate elemental, one of the extremely very first beings, who sat in a realm of flames. At the end of time, at Ragnarok, he would take a burning sword as well as set terminate to the universe. I believed it would be awesome if the Odinsword was truly Surtur’s blade, the one with which he would set terminate to whatever at the end of time.” provided that the Odinsword had been damaged just prior to Simonson getting the project he came up with a new plan.

“I just chose to have Surtur make his own sword. That was my backstory. as well as I ran a series of front stories as the new blade was being forged.”

Thor By Walter Simonson Omnibus Variant Cover

But the 1192 pages are not just about the Odinsword. Oh no. After all, the series likewise debuted Beta Ray Bill, wielding something akin to Mjolnir, the mighty uru hammer of Thor.

“My believed was that I desired a story that didn’t feel as if it had already been told. I figured somebody new ought to pick up the hammer as well as we go from there. The hammer had been around for 20 years, genuine time as well as nobody in the marvel world had chosen it up. as well as I took that as an indicator that no existing character in the MU back then might pick up the hammer, a belief I still hold, subsequent stories notwithstanding.

“It had to be somebody brand new; provided the [hammer’s] inscription, it had to be somebody worthy, whatever that means.  So I produced a character that would have a tragic however heroic background, somebody as selfless as Thor. I needed somebody who was a warrior, so I produced somebody who provided whatever as much as be the biggest warrior of his people. He was selfless since he was trying to save his entire race. He enabled himself with terrible, agonizing implies to ended up being a fantastic weapon. In the end, that enabled the hammer to acknowledge this man as deserving to utilize it.”

Visually, Simonson put his own stamp on all the Kirby creations as well as added to them with his own characters. Whenever he needed assist or a break, Sal Buscema ably stepped forward. It was a revelation, as Sal did a few of his many visually fascinating work in his career.

And then there’s the entire storyline when Walt turned Thor into a frog. however for that, you have to go checked out the book – its well worth the effort.

ROGER’S COMIC RAMBLINGS: FANTAGRAPHICS’ WALT DISNEY’S UNCLE SCROOGE & DONALD DUCK: “THE kid OF THE SUN” – DON ROSA library VOL. 1

Roger Ash

by Roger Ash

Walt Disney’s Uncle Scrooge & Donald Duck: “The kid Of The Sun” – Don Rosa library Vol. 1

Don Rosa is considered by lots of Disney comics fans to be the heir evident to The Duck man himself, Carl Barks. That accolade is not unfounded as his best known work, The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck, is based solidly on Barks’ opus. As good as those stories are, there’s lots a lot more to Rosa’s 20 years of telling Disney Ducks tales. Now, all fans of Disney’s Ducks, Rosa’s comics, and fans of good comics are in for a real treat as Fantagraphics is collecting the entirety of Rosa’s stories starring Donald and Scrooge in chronological buy beginning with Walt Disney’s Uncle Scrooge & Donald Duck: “The kid Of The Sun” – Don Rosa library Vol. 1, collecting stories from 1987 and 1988.

As popular as Rosa’s Duck work has become, it started by chance. When I interviewed him for an post on Gladstone Comics in Back issue #23 (2007), Rosa told me, “I just happened to spot a Gladstone comic. I didn’t know what Gladstone was, but it was a Disney comic. It had a Carl Barks cover on it that I had never seen before, which was impossible because I had full sets of all those old comics. It turned out that it was a cover by Daan Jippes. I gotten it.”

This purchase eventually led to Rosa calling editor Byron Erickson and Rosa’s first Duck story, The kid of the Sun. This is a rollicking adventure that pits Scrooge against his long time nemesis, Flintheart Glomgold, the second richest duck in the world (Scrooge is the richest). In the story, Scrooge, Donald, Huey, Dewey, and Louie compete with Glomgold to find the legendary Incan temple of Manco Capac and the treasure it contains. but of course, things don’t go exactly as planned.

Other long adventures collected in this volume are cash flow and Last Sled to Dawson. cash flow pits Scrooge against classic foes, the Beagle Boys. The Beagle kids encounter the professor from Barks’ story, The Mysterious stone Ray, in a market. He wants to create fumeless cabbages, but isn’t having any luck. In Barks’ story, he instead creates a ray that turns people to stone. In cash Flow, he has created two new rays; one that negates friction and one that negates inertia. using these two weapons, the Beagle kids infiltrate Scrooge’s money Bin. When the anti-friction ray is used on Scrooge’s money, it flows like water and creates havoc in Duckburg.

Don Rosa’s cover to Uncle Scrooge Adventures #5, where “Last Sled to Dawson” originally appeared.

Last Sled to Dawson is a direct sequel to a Carl Barks story. This story was a special one to Rosa as it “was based on my favorite period in Scrooge’s life,” he told me in Back issue #23. “It was a sequel to not necessarily my favorite story of Barks’, called back to the Klondike, but just my favorite element of Scrooge’s past: his love affair with Glittering Goldie and the days before he was rich and just a hard worker with so much personal integrity and individualism. So lots of great old American traits.” add to that the fact that Rosa drew the story on Barks’ old drawing board, and you’ve got a really special story.

The Klondike is where Scrooge made part of his early fortune and in Barks’ story, Scrooge relates some of those adventures to his nephews as they travel back to recover gold he left buried there. In the process, they encounter Glittering Goldie, Scrooge’s great love (aside from money). In Rosa’s sequel, Scrooge, Donald, and the kids return to the Klondike to find Scrooge’s old pet dog sled, which holds treasure but is frozen in ice. Glittering Goldie again enters the picture as does the villainous Soapy Slick.

While Rosa is best known for his longer Duck adventures, that doesn’t indicate he didn’t do shorter stories as well. He did and, as you’ll see in 10 stories in this volume, they’re quite fun. While a lot of are written by Rosa, a couple are written by Gary Leach. A personal favorite of mine is one titled recalled Wreck. Donald completely takes apart his car to clean it. before he reassembles it, he has to go get a part fixed. While he’s away, neighbor Jones sells all the parts of his car in a rummage sale leading Donald and the kids in a race around Duckburg to find them all. The Junior Woodchucks appear as well in Mythological Menagerie where former little Boonehead Donald tries to outwit Huey, Dewey, and Louie once again. As usual, his plans backfire with humorous results.

Don Rosa’s Duck stories are firmly set in the same world and at the same time as Carl Barks’ classic tales. As such, you won’t find any cell phones or HD TVs here. What you will find are top notch comics full of adventure and humor with impressive art. and Ducks. lots of Ducks. other classic characters appear as wellincluding Gladstone Gander, grandma Duck, and Gus Goose. Fantagraphics’ previous Disney collections have contained plenty of commentary and extras, and I expect nothing less here. While these stories have been collected in the past, this series looks to be the best yet. fans of Disney Ducks and good comics, do not miss this collection!

Now, go read a comic!
